This past Thursday was the last of the workshop series that I created: Midsummer Nights Crafts, all held at the incredibly encouraging Shelter Half. I have to say, it truly was a superlative note to end on! Krissy Morrison of Colour Plantae lead an extremely inspired and informative class on the process of natural dyeing and the capabilities that can come from this ancient and gentle practice. Walnuts, elderberries and sourgrass, all hand harvested and transformed into batches of dye. The results were absolutely awe-inspiring and stunning. I couldn't believe how beautiful all the different patterns and colors came out;  all so unique with such vibrant colors. My affinity for plants and nature are of such paramount importance to me, and to think that this could all come from the earth in such an noninvasive manner really has my full attention and interest. It is a such a peaceful process and extremely gratifying. Thank you so much Krissy for sharing your knowledge and skill with us and for doing so with such grace and lightness. You are a breath of fresh air. And thank you Shelter Half for allowing me to hold a space for these workshops in your incredibly fostering space.

Kokedama: String Garden

I made some really sweet kokedama's this weekend to sell at Shelter Half. If you have a small apartment or want an easy-to-take-care of lil' plant friend or simply love moss, you need one! Hang one from your window (preferably not full sun all day) and watch your space get a little dose of magic. Go and get yours (or email me about an upcoming workshop to make your own)!

Caitlin Wylde

Caitlin Wylde's work makes me feel, for lack of a better word description, like home. She has such a spirit in her manner with which she not only creates her work but is apparent in all the other things that she does; where she places objects, what she collects and picks up, what she sews and marries, and how she makes them work together. Her art is textured, layered with pieces from nature and earth; intricate, intertwined, sun-washed and warm. She seems to carry this spirit with her--it meanders through her studio, her art, gardens, and spills into her beautiful home (in Echo Park). When I met her I felt like I was meeting a person from a different era: what I would expect say if I met Patti Smith or maybe Joni Mitchell. She is naturally radiant. Truly inspiring.

This Thursday 6/13 from 7-9pm her art is being exhibited in the amazing space of Shelter Half. I'm going to to be there and hope that you too can make it out. 

Maman

This is my (really beautiful) mom teaching two of her three little ducks to swim in Spain some Summer ago. I never really share pictures of my family here, but I want to dedicate this post to her. She is my constant cheerleader, mentor, graceful adviser and ever beautiful bird of love. (See I told you, every day can be mother's day...). Merci miman.

Fleurs Sauvage!

I know they're a little blurry, but how sweet is Button? She lost her eye when she was only a kitten but it doesn't stop her from anything. Even though she's the bossiest cat in our clan and really bullies the others, she is always by my side, helping. I let her get away with it all. Cute as a...BUTTON!

Natural Dyeing

This past Saturday, Lauren and I attended a natural dye class held at Cookbook and taught by the ever so lovely Britt Brown of Le Papel paper press. It was insanely fun and we all really got our hands (and nails) dirty! Can I just tell you how amazing it smelled in there with our boiling vats of persimmons, hibiscus and blackberries all simmering? It is such a beautiful process and esoteric craft to learn. Britt showed us some Japanese Shibori stitching and taught us about the different papers, fabrics and techniques that we could experiment with. I really appreciated the ephemeral quality of the fabric's fate and the fact that everything in the room that we were using was edible! I think Lauren and I are going to experiment and dye some scarves and yarn and see what we come up with. More on that later...

Also, a huge thank you to Marta and Robert of Cookbook for holding these classes in their beautiful space No.2. They are such a rad couple and brought out an appetizing cheese & charcuterie plate for us to devour at the end of our workshop. If you haven't been to Cookbook yet, please go! You will be incredibly delighted I am certain of this!
