ALL PROCEEDS will go to support the tribes at Standing Rock. In solidarity we stand together strongly. These flowers were hand-picked by me while on nature walks, purchased from farm stands from two farmer's markets that confirmed they were pesticide-free, and the blooming branches I got from my (only) trusted flower vendor at the Flower Mart. These flowers have integrity, vibrations, love, strength and most of all the power to send a message of action over words. Win-win!

Story-telling Through Flower Arranging / A TTL Workshop

A Story Told Through Wildflowers

My flower workshop at The Ecology Center exactly one week ago was incredibly fun and lifting! I am always so blown away by how well students can put flowers together, in their own voice, when given the chance! If you were there, thank you so kindly for being a part of this wonderful group of élèves! If you couldn't attend, then perhaps the next one. 

I always like to bake a little cake the night before class because I feel it's such a nice way to greet my students and start on a full belly. The class was based on a simple idea: telling a story/poem/haiku/thought through the manner which you arranged your flowers. Meaning, letting your arrangements speak for themselves! Seeing that our materials (lucky us - wildflowers picked from TEC's native gardens) had an expiration date, much like all of our lives, the stories didn't have to be perfect or linear or even needed to be understood by everyone. They were going to be present for a week at the most. They just needed to stem from an inner 'story' as opposed to a formulaic rule of how-to's, so that the student could connect with his/her floral creation. Hopefully this was freeing, leaving the student to channel some inner creative guidance.

I have to admit to you, I got goose bumps and my heart swelled when I heard everyone share what their arrangements meant. We set all the finished pieces along the breezy porch and one by one everyone spoke. Some were funny, some were bold while others told of heartache and  remembrance. A few represented food and a few others had bigger philosophies. All were incredibly heartfelt. So much so that I photographed all of them individually and will be releasing a little impromptu book of postcards with my student's floral creations + stories! A collection of stories as told through flowers, to send to someone you're thinking of through the mail! Much more on that - I am shooting to release this around the holidays and will have it on my website/shop too. 

Thank you again to everyone! I so thoroughly enjoyed everyone's story as told through their handpicked wildflowers. Bravo xx

What a weekend we had over at the L.A. Art Book Fair at MoCA Geffen Contemporary in Little Tokyo! Leigh and I were in charge of the BOOK STAND table all weekend long and it was so much fun! The theme that Claire so cleverly created for BOOK STAND was one color : pink. We got to:

• meet the loveliest bunch of people
• part stacks of books aside to set up a temporary flower shop + sell monochromatic pink flowers (!)
• share all of our favorite artists / photographs / books / journals that fell under the pink umbrella
• drink strawberry-silver-milk from Moon Juice
• stare at Mark Borthwick's 'all the best bird`s feel her' poster over at Jane & Jeremy stand
• spotting Yolandi Visser of Die Antwoord  nearby getting a book signed
• dress in shades of blush and pink all in the name of pink
• witness a very special moon fish collection
• got to see/touch base with so many friends that we hadn't seen in a long while
• got to enjoy (finally) some rain as we were tearing down Sunday night

Overall it was a success! More than anything I enjoyed getting to spend time with Leigh Patterson, who I don't often get to see because she lives in Austin, Texas. Important to mention too: it was so nice meeting all of you who so kindly stopped by to introduce yourselves, to say hello, or simply talk flowers with me. Gosh I was so stoked! Still am, actually...

Poolside at The Standard Hotel, Hollywood

after some hard work, some hard play in the sun, girls-in-fields style

The Standard Hotel, Hollywood, has been a dream client to work with. They hired me this summer to plant-scape some green and magic into their diner and provide weekly fresh flowers for the tables. The plant/flower magic was called upon as a nod to their new chef, Nina Clemente, who is really elevating diner food to another level. Non-GMO product is a huge part of Nina's philosophy, and even their canola oil (for their insanely good fries) is non-GMO! Organic produce, lots of vegan options, daily fresh squeezed juices and the best lemon-blueberry pancakes I have ever had just to list a few of the noteworthy changes. The menu is A+ and the diner is so elegant with scents of fresh rosemary and sage. Sometimes when I'm working on the plants and flowers I feel that if I were to turn around I would spot Holly Golightly sitting at a booth by herself, indulging in some pancakes, her huge black sunglasses covering her eyes.
