Motel 6 Flowers / AKA Two Hundred Dahlias

We had a big wedding in Santa Ynez that required us to stay up there. We checked into a Motel 6 to save on costs and to add to the charm of an already trying wedding (the last time I stayed at one was when I was quite young so strangely fulfilling a moment of nostalgia for me). It was really, really hot which adds to the stress because time management becomes crucial. The last thing you want is to have wilted flowers or worst, dead flowers. Especially if those flowers are dahlias. Two hundred dahlias. Two hundred star-flowers dahlias. The front-and-center showpieces. So we did what any normal florist would do: we rented them a room!  

We single-handedly transformed the motel into a wildflower workshop! Slowly overtaking the room itself, flowers started to spill out onto the hallway, lining the walls, down the staircases while we used the tops of old AC units to the adjacent rooms for creating arrangements. All this while the delicate dahlias sat underneath the cranked flow of the air conditioner, sipping cool water to their hearts content and letting their stems splash around in the clear water underneath them. I was so delighted that I had my Canon F1 with me to capture this. In the midst of the craziness of processing, arranging, misting, and pleasing all the flowers, something started happening to the otherwise still, stagnant air that was there when we first arrived. Transformation. Elegance and grace started to creep in while jasmine fragrance filled the air of our flower sphere. The magic is real. What flowers can do to a space is downright sensational. What they did to that Motel 6 was utterly transcendental.  

So happy to get to share some of these images with you from that memorable day. And major thanks to my team: Alana + Seana, I could not have done it without you both!

EVOLVE / The Ecology Center

I couldn't be more honored to be featured on the cover of Issue 10/Fall 2014 of The Ecology Center's beautifully curated eco-journal, Evolve. Seriously, thank you! Have a peek through the issue - it will tell you about the upcoming Maker's Market (that is happening this Sat) and give you a nice overview of what The Ecology Center is about. Coincidentally very  much what the spirit of TIGERS to LILIES philosophy for keeping things wild and natural is all about too.

So many wonderful artisans and goods will be available and you will be supporting makers who are trying their best to create sustainable, well-crafted goods.

And we're back from Virginia! Would you like to see a little bit of my mom's wedding? I wasn't going to share a lot because I feel that it was a very intimate and heartfelt experience and sometimes I like to keep those for myself. Do you feel like that too sometimes? How much do we share with others via social media vs. how much we keep for our own hearts and treasures? I always go back and forth.

In the meantime, here are some outtakes of photos that I arranged and styled and shot for the Gardenista feature I was so stoked to do this past spring. Simplicity is always best for me. Can you feel the breeze in the last shot?

...and after my workshop at The Ecology Center, I couldn't resist taking my étudiante Jessica + student Corrin + V.v. straight to Laguna Beach! How could we not? We feasted on some grilled fish tacos and then made a beeline to the warm sand, salty fresh air and turquoise blue water. It was such a perfect end to a perfect day! We took off our shoes and dipped our toes in the crashing shore-break while V.v. basked in the sun. Life is so beautiful.

A Story Told Through Wildflowers

My flower workshop at The Ecology Center exactly one week ago was incredibly fun and lifting! I am always so blown away by how well students can put flowers together, in their own voice, when given the chance! If you were there, thank you so kindly for being a part of this wonderful group of élèves! If you couldn't attend, then perhaps the next one. 

I always like to bake a little cake the night before class because I feel it's such a nice way to greet my students and start on a full belly. The class was based on a simple idea: telling a story/poem/haiku/thought through the manner which you arranged your flowers. Meaning, letting your arrangements speak for themselves! Seeing that our materials (lucky us - wildflowers picked from TEC's native gardens) had an expiration date, much like all of our lives, the stories didn't have to be perfect or linear or even needed to be understood by everyone. They were going to be present for a week at the most. They just needed to stem from an inner 'story' as opposed to a formulaic rule of how-to's, so that the student could connect with his/her floral creation. Hopefully this was freeing, leaving the student to channel some inner creative guidance.

I have to admit to you, I got goose bumps and my heart swelled when I heard everyone share what their arrangements meant. We set all the finished pieces along the breezy porch and one by one everyone spoke. Some were funny, some were bold while others told of heartache and  remembrance. A few represented food and a few others had bigger philosophies. All were incredibly heartfelt. So much so that I photographed all of them individually and will be releasing a little impromptu book of postcards with my student's floral creations + stories! A collection of stories as told through flowers, to send to someone you're thinking of through the mail! Much more on that - I am shooting to release this around the holidays and will have it on my website/shop too.
