Tim Walker: Magical Thinking

DREAM STATE
a photo shoot by: Tim Walker

Of this incredible photo shoot done by none other than our beloved Tim Walker, stylist Jacob K states that "It was based on pure fantasy." It was photographed in two stages, the second ending in a chimney fire that took firefighters 15 hours to get under control! The insanely beautifully tousled cherry blossoms were styled by set designer Shona Heath. I love the proportions between the vase and the branches. And she created the flame spewing dragon out of foil cupcakes liners! It all really is magical creating, right? I would have loved to have been working on that set to see the magical dreamscaping unfolding in front of my very own eyes.

Thierry Boutemy: fleuriste

I thought that I might delight you with this post on fleuriste extrordinaire, Thierry Boutemy. I'm quite certain you know of him even if his name doesn't ring a bell. He was the flower magician for Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. 'Ah-ha!' I can almost hear you say! He is a revered player of flowers and all things wild in the fashion world and I am almost quite certain you have seen his work in editorials or photos. I couldn't resist not buying this month's British Vogue just so that I could tear through the article on him and then tear the pages out to scan and share with you! He is a wonderfully brilliant artist. He's more than a florist or lover of flowers, I believe. I cannot say enough good things about him: he really inspires me. The creations that he masterfully builds and breathes life into are so awe-inspiring: just look at the giant balls of white hydrangeas hanging from the ceiling! He pushes any notions of what a flower can be or represents, and yet he really is very quite simple about them. Unfussy, even. He spins magic...

travels...

I cannot even begin to describe the gratitude that comes from shooting film and then processing it and getting photos back that really make my heart sing. I wanted to share a little bit with you. It seems like Elijah, V.v. and I have been doing a lot of moving around and a lot of eating along the way. It's always a little bit of a gamble when I bring along my old 35mm and polaroids and in the middle of lugging them around the idea that it might be all in vain is always in the back of my mind...and then this happens...I get some really beautiful shots. Not all of them, mind you, but just enough. I hope that you like these too.

p.s. sorry it's been so long!

¡Hola Amigos! Elijah and I are back from México and had a really, really fun time! I want to share some stories with you but I have my pictures to scan into my computer first. Also, school started and I am so excited about this new new frontier: color photography! Pretty neat so far...

A classmate shared the above photograph in class of Molly Ringwald, shot by master photographer Sheila Metzner. I liked it so much I thought that you might too. So beautiful how the real flowers blend in with the wallflowers, no? And such an interesting way to shoot Molly--she couldn't be a wallflower if she tried! Clever.

Have you been to México? Have you heard of Sheila? What have you been up to?
